Bush to Propose Funds for Black, Hispanic Education President Bush will propose funding increases for Hispanic-serving institutions and historically black colleges and universities in his 2004 budget, the White House said in a statement on Sunday, on the eve of the Martin Luther King Day holiday. Am I just being cynical, or does it strike anyone else as strange that Mr. Bush would be willing to increase funding at colleges and universities which primarily cater to blacks and Latinos, but won't support affirmative action to increase the number of blacks and Latinos making it to majority-white colleges and universities?
It is amazing to me that most of the Republicans in this country (apparently, with the exception of Condoleezza Rice and Colin Powell) fail to understand the need for us to continue to pursue integration at all levels of our society in order to overcome the legacy of racism which still has a strong hold here.
Race IS a valid consideration for admittance to our nation's universities, since it causes folks to encounter people different from themselves and hopefully helps to break down the walls which divide us. Even if there were no economic benefit to communities which have been historically underprivileged, there would still be a massive benefit in the ways that multiracial campuses help create people who are comfortable living with (and creating friendships with) all of their fellow Americans, not just those who look similar to themselves.
