As we draw near to the deadline for war, I have but one prayer:

"God bless America. God bless Iraq. God bless the world."

Conscience in Time of War. Both US soldiers and war dissenters are performing a public service. And both are patriots. [Christian Science Monitor]

I can only hope that the American people embrace this perspective during the course of the war, and that the troops understand that those who question the reasons for war do not support them any less than those who who believe the war is necessary.

Thanks to IsThatLegal? for the link.

Bush's Gamble. Someday, this victory will look hollow because we couldn't be bothered to do it the right way. [Dan Gillmor's eJournal]

I can't say that I quite share Dan Gillmor's pessimism (I think there's still a chance that Bush will lose in 2004 regardless of the outcome of the war), but he has nailed my feelings with regard to this war and the Bush administration's policies in general on the head.

I, too, hope that the war is won quickly and Saddam is removed from power, that the doomsday scenarios put forward by the anti-war camp do not come to pass, and that few Americans or Iraqis are killed in the conflict. But I fear that a quick, "clean" (if any war can be called clean), victory in Iraq would assure Mr. Bush of re-election and doom the world to a series of wars which in the end would do nothing to make it a safer place.
