War May Affect 570,000 Iraqi Children. More than half a million traumatized Iraqi children could need psychological counseling by the time the war ends, the U.N. Children's Fund representative in Iraq said Friday. "There are 5.7 million primary school age children in Iraq, and we estimate that a minimum of 10 percent of those would need support," said Carel de Rooy. [Associated Press]
$63 billion is a lot of money, but what these children have to endure is of even greater cost.
Even if at times war may be unavoidable, it is never good. Even if it is the lesser of two evils, the fact remains that it is still evil. Let us not forget that at the receiving end of the video-game images we see on CNN are people who are dying; children who are suffering; and families which will be broken apart.
