The next time someone claims that Republicans stand for “smaller government,” don’t believe them:
President Bush’s second-term agenda would expand not only the size of the federal government but also its influence over the lives of millions of Americans by imposing new national restrictions on high schools, court cases and marriages.
Democrats and Republicans are both big government parties. The only difference being in the parts of the government that they want to super size. Democrats tend to favor increasing spending on social programs and regulations to protect us from the harms of unregulated capitalism. Republicans tend to favor increasing defense spending and extending the reach of government into our private lives (examples: gay marriage amendment and increasing powers given to the FBI and CIA post-9/11). And both parties love pork barrel programs to ensure their re-election.
Personally, I prefer the Democrats’ version of big government. But don’t let the Republicans fool you - this isn’t about the party of big government versus the party of small government. It’s about which type of big government you like.
