Resign, Mr. Cheney

The Vice President advocated the use of torture in certain circumstances today:

Vice President Dick Cheney made an unusual personal appeal to Republican senators this week to allow CIA exemptions to a proposed ban on the torture of terror suspects in U.S. custody, according to participants in a closed-door session.

Cheney should resign. As an American, I find his stance contrary to the values upon which this nation was founded, namely, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” The use of torture strips those upon whom it is applied of these unalienable rights.

As a follower of Jesus, Cheney’s position horrifies me. There are many different interpretations of Jesus’ teachings when it comes to war, but there can be no interpretation which could advocate the application of the inhumanity of torture upon any person.

More pleasant news from the Vice President’s office:

Vice President Dick Cheney’s office was responsible for issuing the directives which led to U.S. soldiers to abuse prisoners in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to a NPR interview with Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, former chief of staff to Secretary of State Colin Powell.

Not that I didn’t suspect this all along, but if these allegations are true, the Vice President should resign. So how about it, Mr. Powell - is this true? It’s time to break the silence.
