It's time for me to meet everyone. I've been hiding behind the Internet for the
past two years. My name is Steve Ross. Nice to meet you all! Hopefully some of you
will introduce yourselves to me as well.
So, what kind of person would put up a Web site like this? Well, for those that
are curious, I'm a Christian (duh), I'm a left-coaster (from Los Angeles, no less!),
and I'm a member of the Entrepreneurial Generation. You know, the Xers, the Baby
Busters, the generation that got all the bad pub in the early '90s from clueless
Baby Boomers. By the way, if you didn't guess, I hate all of those labels applied
to us. I just thought of Entrepreneurial Generation. It fits! I'll write about it
some time.
Politically, I'm very non-partisan. I'm a registered Green. I'm anti-abortion.
But I'm undecided as to whether the government should outlaw it. Check back with me
later. I'm anti-death penalty. I'm for medical marijuana. I think the welfare
system needs to be completely overhauled. I hate what establishment liberals
stand for. I think that people need to take more personal responsibility,
especially the poor. I hate the victim complex. But I am convinced that society
does oppress a lot of people and that needs to stop even more urgently. I'm pro-affirmative
action. I feel the government has a responsibility to EMPOWER its poorer members
to succeed, probably using large amounts of cash to do it. I'm a capitalist. I
think the communist government in China is evil, but am hoping they are closer to
"one country, two systems" than Tienanmen square. I think Cuba should be given
a break. I think Saddam Hussein is even more evil than the Chinese government. But
I opposed the Gulf War.
Politically, I'm quite complex. Please don't seek to debate me on the issues. I
am much more interested in loving people than I am in being right. I reserve the
right to be absolutely wrong! I hope in time that my wrongness will become right-
ness. But political debates never do that. They harden people. They make people
enemies. I only bring up the political things to give you an idea of who I am.
More important than my political convictions by far are my Kingdom convictions. I
am absolutely convinced that racial reconciliation is essential to the future of
both the Church and this country. Only Jesus' love for all people, despite our
differences, will keep us from killing each other. I am also absolutely convinced
that Jesus calls us all to love the poor as well as our immediate neighbors. For
some of us, our immediate neighbors are the poor. For others, we must go out of
our way to love them. But LOVE is KEY!
But on the other side of that complex equation are my faith struggles. I won't go
into them in much detail here because trust me, you'll hear about them. But although
many times I have a hard time believing in God, I still KNOW deep down that He
exists, He LOVES me, and He is exceedingly good. I still love Jesus.
So that's a pretty good snapshot of me. No doubt it will become fuller as I
leave this window open for longer. That's what this experiment is all about!
